Physiotherapy Continues to Assist the War Torn
At the beginning of the year, we reported on how physiotherapy was being employed to effectively treat injured soldiers from the Ukraine. Nearly a year later a follow-up news report (November 18) has indicated that physio continues to be a critical part of holistic treatment plans for those exhibiting long-term injuries:
“The increased demand for early rehabilitation services has put extra strain on the country’s healthcare system. In response, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) launched an early rehabilitation project at Cherkasy hospital, in central Ukraine […] The project integrates physiotherapy, psychological support, and nursing care to address the complex needs of war-wounded patients early in their recovery process […] Through early rehabilitation, MSF aims to improve patients’ quality of life, stabilize their emotional state, reduce pain, and prevent the long-term complications frequently associated with severe injuries, including the risks of infection and muscle atrophy. Ultimately, this approach supports patients in regaining independence, enabling those with severe injuries to care for themselves.” (source)
Given the state of the world today (Russia-Ukraine, Israeli–Palestinian, etc.) the necessity of physiotherapy for the treatment of active military persons, veterans, and civilians is now considered more essential than ever. While we’re thankfully removed from the direct impacts of war here in Canada (for the most part, that is) it is important for everyone to understand this holistic nature of physiotherapy in maintaining health and wellness of all involved.
Stay tuned for more in the months ahead as we monitor news from around the world that may apply to your own wellness program.
