Common Reasons Why Your Shoulder Feels Like it’s Clicking When You Move it (and how physiotherapy will help)

Crepitus

The word sounds creepy, but it needn’t be of concern. Crepitus is a term used to describe when shoulder tendons and ligaments shifting or snapping over bones in the joint and subsequently cause the clicking sensation that you are feeling. The condition can be caused by the presence of air bubbles, roughened cartilage, or tendon and ligament issues in the shoulder area. Physiotherapy can correct crepitus by strengthening the muscles around impacted shoulder joints, improving mobility, and reducing pressure. Other physiotherapist prescribed treatments such as manual therapy (mobilization and manipulation) can assist with issues such as air bubbles.

Mild to Moderate Rotator Cuff Tear

Does the clicking sensation cooccur with mild to moderate pain in the shoulder? If so, you may have sustained a rotator cuff tear. Physiotherapy is absolutely essential to rotator cuff repair. We have covered rotator cuff injuries extensively, and provided insight into how long it takes for them to heal (and for the pain and clicking to be gone) right here.

Labral Tear

If the clicking sensation cooccurs with pain in the shoulder, but a rotator cuff is not the culprit, you may have experienced a labral tear. This term refers to an injury to the labrum, which is a ring of cartilage that lines the edge of the shoulder joint socket, that in addition to clicking, causes pain and instability. It may be the result of from acute trauma, repetitive movements, or structural abnormalities in the joint. Physiotherapy intervention will focus on restoring range of motion, strengthening surrounding muscles, and improving stability. In addition to stretches, exercises such as rotator cuff strengthening, scapular stabilization, and functional movement training will typically be incorporated.
