How Physiotherapy Can be Beneficial for Chronic Buttock Pain

Treatment for Tailbone Pain

Some people reference tailbone pain as buttock area pain. If you’re one of them, you may be experiencing coccydynia or coccygodynia. It may sound complicated, but it is a common condition. Physiotherapy interventions can be very effective in the resolution of pain and dysfunction. A physiotherapist can identify which structures are involved and then create a specific strengthening program for you to complete at home. Furthermore, your physiotherapist may employ manual therapy such as joint and soft tissue mobilization to manage the tailbone injury and facilitate full recovery. In some cases, internal manual therapy in the form of pelvic floor physiotherapy may be required to mobilize connected tissues. A physiotherapist can also assist by recommending specific “equipment” for use at home and in the office, such as wedge-shaped cushions.

Treatment for Sciatica

Buttock pain along with numbness and/or pins-and-needles tingling is also often associated with Sciatica. The condition occurs when there is pressure or damage to the sciatic nerve or its component nerve roots, and may be caused by general compression or irritation of the spinal nerve roots that come together to make the sciatic nerve. It may also be the result of compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve itself. More common causes are disc herniations, spinal joint inflammation, and piriformis muscle irritation. Physiotherapy can be very effective in treating buttock pain related sciatica (view more).

Treatments for Other Causes of Buttock Pain

There are a number of other musculoskeletal issues that may cause and/or refer pain to the buttock region, all of which can be managed through physiotherapy interventions. These include the following:
