CHIROPRACTIC FAQ
What happens during a chiropractic treatment?
On the first visit, patients will fill out preliminary paperwork that will indicate to the chiropractor why you are seeking care. The chiropractor will then use a variety of diagnostic techniques, including asking questions about your injury or condition, performing a physical examination and perhaps referring out for x-rays (if necessary). Once the patient’s condition is assessed, the chiropractor will recommend the optimal form of treatment, as well as some alternatives.
The primary treatment used by chiropractors is a chiropractic adjustment (spinal manipulation); a gentle, controlled and directed pressure that helps to restore the spine and nervous system to function optimally.
Chiropractors will also use therapies that may include joint mobilization, soft-tissue therapies (such as Active Release Techniques®, and trigger-point therapy), heat, cold and rehabilitative exercises as treatment methods; they do not treat patients with drugs or surgery.
What does an adjustment feel like? I’m scared of getting ‘cracked’
It is common to hear a slight noise from the shifting of gas and fluids in the joint after a chiropractic adjustment and is perfectly normal. However, we appreciate that some patience would prefer different styles of adjusting. Make sure you speak to your Chiropractor about any concerns you may have, as we have many techniques available.
How will I feel after an adjustment?
Most people experience more energy, less discomfort, more flexibility, and an overall feeling of enhanced well-being. Occasionally, you may be slightly sore or tired as your body adapts to the changes occurring. The Chiropractor will monitor your progress very closely to ensure maximal comfort during this time of change.
In some patients with long-term chronic conditions, realigning the spine may also cause the muscles around the spine to be sore afterwards. This is only temporary, until the weakened muscles are strengthened. This is comparable to the discomfort felt after a good work out at the gym.
I think my problem is muscular, can you still help me?
Absolutely. The nervous system controls the tension of your muscles so it is important to get this functioning at it’s best. Most people find that once they get adjusted their muscles begin to relax naturally as their spine and nerves begin to function normally again. Chiropractic uses various techniques that affect both the spine and musculature, and may refer you to a massage therapist and/or physiotherapist where required.
Does ICBC cover my treatments?
You will need to contact your extended health provider to find out this information in regards to what your plan covers. Some plans do require a doctor’s referral for physiotherapy/massage therapy/chiropractic treatment in order to be reimbursed and some do not. If you are unsure, make sure to contact your provider and ask them how much they cover you for. Please call us if you need further assistance.
