Post-surgical Rehabilitation: Sports Physiotherapy Competitive Athletic Rehabilitation
Kyle’s post-surgical rehabilitation performance at the 1st Trials at the 2013 Finals
Local Vancouver Area competitive athlete, Kyle, has been an inspiration to me since the day I met him. Kyle is an elite level gymnast that suffered a knee injury (avulsion fracture of his patella) which required surgery and post-surgical rehabilitation. From Kyle’s surgery, he had limited knee range of motion, reduced knee strength, and increased swelling.
His physiotherapy treatment consisted of the use of modalities to reduce pain and swelling. Joint mobilizations and muscle energy techniques were used to improve his knee range of motion. And most importantly, an individualized exercise program was provided to correct for any muscular imbalance Kyle had from his surgery.

Sports physiotherapy treatment was aimed towards improving Kyle’s knee range of motion, strength, endurance, and sport-specific tasks. With individualized sorts physiotherapy and Kyle’s hard-work, he is now back to competing at an elite level. Since his injury and surgery, he has competed in several tournaments in which he won multiple bronze, silver, and gold (mostly gold) medals.
