What You Need to Do When You Experience Pain When Jogging
Identify Where in Your Body the Pain is Located
Being able to communicate where the pain is isolated to will help us get to the bottom of what is happening from a musculoskeletal perspective. It may be focused on one area, or more. We have prepared a large body of content that focuses on localized pain (sometimes referred to as somatic pain) with articles that you can reference for insight. Please have a look at the ones that apply to lower extremity pain that you may be feeling when jogging:
- Understanding inner thigh pain
- Understanding buttock / gluteus pain
- Understanding knee pain
- Understanding foot pain
- Understanding toe pain
Do you instead (or also) experience discomfort in your lower back or elsewhere in your upper torso when running? If so, there may be spinal issues to address that require chiropractic intervention.
To reiterate, it’s very important for you to communicate with a physiotherapist where ALL forms of pain and discomfort are located along and within your body when jogging. Some people are afraid to, in the same manner that they dare not bring up an odd rattle or hum to a mechanic when they bring their vehicle in for a separate isolated issue. Ultimately, it’s in your best interests to cover all basis so that we get to the root of the issue and send you back out on to the pavement operating at optimum capacity.
Receive a Running Assessment
The next step is to seek a running assessment:
“A running assessment involves a thorough evaluation to understand your unique biomechanics, identify areas of weakness or injury, and optimize your running technique and training plan.” (What is a Running Assessment?)
Benefits of this service for those who experience pain while jogging include the following:
- Identifies movement patterns and influences on pain
- Tests strength capacity as it relates to pain
- Establishes ground-rules regarding pain when jogging and covers load management principles
- Incorporates manual therapy for soft tissue and joint range of motion to mitigate pain
Another advantage of a running assessment that we want to isolate from the bullet points above, is footwear advice. A significant amount of pain felt while jogging may be attributed to inadequate footwear. You may have spent a small fortune trying on new running shoes, only for pain to persist. Our running specialist will keep this from happening by performing a running gait analysis which will likely confirm that you require custom orthotics – inserts for your running shoes. These specially made inserts can make a world of difference for casual and hardcore joggers alike.
