Pilot Project Finds Patients Benefitting from Quick Access to Physiotherapy
Earlier in the year (2024) a pilot program was launched in Fredericton New Brunswick. The hospital based program identifies patients who could benefit from physiotherapy during triage and connects them to health professionals on-site within the department. Early intervention physio is something that our industry has been calling upon the public health sector to integrate for years, and it is finally coming to fruition. At the end of July, in a news release, it was announced that the program is indeed benefiting patients. We (and the public) hope to see other programs across Canadian provinces, cities, and towns follow suit.
“This innovative approach is not only enhancing the overall quality of care provided to patients, but also contributes to more efficient operations and patient flow in our ED […] By connecting patients to physiotherapy and occupational therapy services within the emergency department itself, this is helping to improve patient outcomes and patient flow, while optimizing our staffing resources and enhancing the overall patient experience during their visit.” (Jacqueline Gordon, Horizon Health Network)
Study Finds Physiotherapy Beneficial for More Disorders
One consistent theme that you will find in our monthly physiotherapy news updates, are references to newly released studies regarding how our discipline helps people struggling with all sorts of disorders. Results of a new study that were released on August 5, 2024, continue to support the necessity of physiotherapy as a supplement for traditional medical interventions. This study pointed to physiotherapy’s contribution to the management of symptoms of Scheuermann Disease along with Lumbar Canal Stenosis and Bilateral Lower Limb Radiculopathy. Scheuermann Disease describes a childhood condition where the vertebrae grow unevenly with respect to the sagittal plane. Lumbar Canal Stenosis a condition in which the spinal canal narrows and compresses the nerves and blood vessels at the level of the lumbar vertebrae. Meanwhile, Bilateral Lower Limb Radiculopathy presents as excruciating, burning, or stinging pain that radiates down the leg, decreasing sensation of the legs, and manifests as numbness and tingling, and in more severe cases, results in muscle weakness. If you or a loved one struggles with any of the above, reach out to a physiotherapist right away.
