Physiotherapy in the News - Autumn 2019

We’re in the middle of autumn and that means it’s time for our quarterly news update regarding the world of physiotherapy as it applies to the public – those seeking to improve their health, wellness, and overall body function. Let’s review.

Two Recent Media Reports Regarding Physiotherapy You Need to Know About

Physiotherapy Helps Disabled Kids, and Even More So with Pink Dolphins

No, you didn’t just inhale something that your neighbors may be smoking. You are indeed reading about pink dolphins in relation to physiotherapy. Allow us to explain.
An international story made the news this autumn about a physiotherapist in Brazil who works with disabled children. Igor Simões Andrade has applied traditional physiotherapy to help restore and/or improve physical functions for hundreds of kids, and in some cases has allowed them to leave their wheelchairs in the dust. While that in itself may not be news, because the benefits of physio for those with disabilities have become fact, Andrade made headlines by (in addition to traditional physiotherapy) taking kids with disabilities swimming with wild freshwater pink dolphins in the Amazon. He found that his young patients would mimic the natural swimming motions of these friendly mammals to the point that they exhibited improvements with their own physical function.
And therein lies the moral of the story. At the core, physiotherapy is steeped in definitive science to prescribe treatments and therapies to help people of all ages move, become pain free, and feel better. But as physiotherapists we also think outside of the box more than most (all?) health practitioners because there is no single cookie cutter solution to what ails you. Most of these solutions are found under our services, but if it means we need to dive into the Amazon in search of pink dolphins, then that’s what we’ll do.

He finally broke silence this autumn, sharing that he suffered major back injuries in the accident but is absolutely on the road to recovery thanks to a positive attitude and rigorous regime of physiotherapy. Hart was initially hospitalized (after receiving back surgery) for 10 days before being discharged to undergo physical therapy at a rehabilitation facility. Below is some insight into his recovery:
