Top Stories from February of 2023 Regarding Physiotherapy You Need to Know About

Physiotherapy to be Introduced into the ER?

Most people know the horrors of their local hospital emergency room (ER). We’re not just referring to the literal pain and discomfort caused by an injury or other physical conditions, but the excessive wait times and lack of attention from staff. A group of physiotherapists on the East Coast of Canada is suggesting ways for physiotherapy to put an end to that. Global News reports that they are advocating for a presence in hospital ERs to assist with the needs of visiting patients, where physiotherapy can be of direct assistance. There are a number of cases with respect to chronic and acute pains, strains, and mobility malfunctions that a physiotherapist can assist with until patients can get in to see a doctor, which often doesn’t happen for hours after admission.

Making physiotherapy a part of a multi-disciplinary emergency department program can be highly successful, and offers a number of benefits that span from the immediate to longterm:

” […] the addition of ‘allied health professionals’ to emergency departments would have an almost immediate benefit to the health care system — reducing wait times, repeat visits and opioid prescriptions.” (Global News)

Anything that can be done to ease both patient pain/discomfort and the burden on ER staff is beneficial.

Physiotherapy Integrated into Over 60 Hospitals

This story is a direct carryover from the one above, although this time it carries readers over to the other side of the world. Physiotherapy units have just been added to over 60 hospitals in Egypt. In this move to foster a multi-disciplinary environment, the hospital seeks to leverage physiotherapy to assist with conditions including (but not exclusive to) diabetes, hypertension, heart diseases, kidney malfunction, digestive diseases, anemia, obesity, nutrition, and mental health.

The world is finally realizing the benefits of physiotherapy intervention across a wide number of conditions and ailments.
