February is a month made notable by Valentine’s Day, Family Day (in British Columbia), and the fact that it’s shorter than the other 11 months of the year. Despite all of the ongoings and rush to get things done before the arrival of spring, we encourage you to pause and remember to make your health a top priority. And a part of any truly holistic health strategy is physiotherapy. In this month’s newsletter we have uncovered a couple of stories that may motivate you and your household to add physio to your wellness regime for the remainder of the year ahead. Let’s review!
Top Stories from February of 2025 Regarding Physiotherapy You Need to Know About
ICBC Recovery Network Launching in One-Month
ICBC’s new Recovery Network is launching on March 22, 2025. It references a group of select healthcare providers in British Columbia who have been chosen by the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) to offer injured individuals improved access to treatment following a motor vehicle accident (MVA). It allows for a more seamless direct billing process and may provide additional injury recovery services and benefits made available within the network. Is there any difference from an end-user perspective compared to what someone may have experienced with physiotherapy clinics that allow ICBC direct billing (such as Absolute PhysioCare) in the past? There is expected to be less “red-tape” in the direct billing process for the client because clinics (i.e. yours truly) will already be confirmed as an approved member.
Adolescents Face Longterm Harm without Early Physiotherapy Intervention
Early in the month, The Guardian reported on a study conducted by a group of pediatric physiotherapists that found children and teenagers face the risk of lifelong trauma from untreated chronic pain. The study was prompted by unfortunately long wait times to see physiotherapists in the UK, some of which is due to a lack of geographic access. You can read more about the study here, but the moral of the news story is clear – early intervention is critical to the lifetime wellbeing of adolescents who sustain an injury in sport, an MVA, or other event that causes an acute compromise to the musculoskeletal system. Parents, please take note and schedule an immediate assessment for your injured child, whether it be for a severely sprained ankle, any type of muscle tear, or more.
