Physiotherapy in the News | June 2024

Physiotherapy News

The summertime is upon us, with Burnaby, Greater Vancouver BC residents planning ahead for their summer vacations and all sorts of activities. While combing through travel sites and Instagram/TikTok feeds for information on what to do, we encourage you to also take a moment to catch up with what’s happening in the world of physiotherapy. After all, you never know when you may need it, especially during the annum’s most physically active season. Let’s review what’s happening with physiotherapy in the news as of June 2024.

Top Stories from June of 2024 Regarding Physiotherapy You Need to Know About

Physical Therapy Shown to be Effective for Polytrauma Treatment

Polytrauma is a term used to describe when someone has sustained multiple injuries, such as numerous fractures from an event. Common causes include motor vehicle accidents. Less common events may include a botched bungee-jump. You get the idea. Polytrauma is not something you ever want to experience. A single rib fracture is enough to contend with, but can you image it cooccurring with fractures on other parts of your body?

If you ever find yourself needing to recover from polytrauma you can at least find some peace of mind that physiotherapy can help you return to normal life. A case study was just released on the first day of June, 2024, with results backing the efficacy of physical therapy for this un fortunate condition:

“The post-fracture treatment program has proven productive, leading to significant enhancements in both well-being and physical functionality. The case report outlines a comprehensive treatment plan for patients who have undergone fracture repair recovery. Following eight weeks of focused physical therapy, the patient experienced improved muscle strength, a gradual increase in hip range of motion, enhanced functional capacity, reduced pain, enhanced ambulation, and better performance in routine tasks.” (Cureus)

Physio for Cardiorespiratory Treatment Too?

We like to use our monthly physiotherapy news segment to highlight unexpected applications of physio. For instance, did you know that a physiotherapist can negate (or supplement) the need to hire a sex therapist? While we’re not exploring that route further today, we do want to draw your attention to how physio is being employed to treat cardiorespiratory concerns. A June 3 release from London Health Sciences Centre confirms the following:

“Cardiorespiratory physiotherapy, also known as ‘chest physiotherapy,’ is an area of physiotherapy that focuses on the assessment and treatment of people with conditions affecting the cardiovascular (heart) and respiratory (lung) systems. These conditions include cystic fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pneumonia and recent heart attacks, among others.”

If you or a loved one suffers from any of the above, consider supplementing your physician prescribed strategy with physiotherapy interventions as well. It may be the holistic solution you (or a loved one) needs to achieve optimal health and wellness.
