We’re in the final stretch of 2023, with the Holiday season around the corner. But before we get to our annual tips to preparing your body for Christmas shopping and shindigs, it’s time for a news update from the world of physiotherapy. What’s new this November that individuals and households should know about as it pertains to musculoskeletal health? Let’s find out!
Top Stories from November of 2023 Regarding Physiotherapy You Need to Know About
Physiotherapy Critical to Treating Avascular Necrosis
With each new physiotherapy news report, we feature recent studies regarding diseases and medical issues that traditionally have not been treated by physiotherapy, yet have benefited from interventions in modern times. This month, research has unveiled that physiotherapy can be effectively employed to help people who suffer from avascular necrosis (AVN). AVN is a disease that results from permanent or temporary loss of blood supply to the bone. When blood supply is cut off, bone tissue dies and the bone collapses. If this occurs near a joint, the joint surface may collapse. AVN most commonly occurs in the femoral head (thigh bone), knee, talus (lower part of the ankle joint), humeral head (arm bone), and the hips. The hips are the most common location of AVN overall. When untreated, the affected area becomes fragile and can collapse, resulting in debilitating osteoarthritis.
A recent study has found that when combined with surgery, physiotherapy can be effective in treating avascular necrosis:
“Surgical intervention along with physiotherapy treatment improved the patient’s range of motion of the hip as well as the knee and strength in both extremities, which made the patient independent in their activities of daily living. Initially, the patient was unable to sit gradually. After physiotherapy treatment, the patient could sit without support. Initially, the range of hip and his muscle strength was low, but now he can move his hip and perform his activities on his own and can also perform activities of daily living with minimal support.”
Soccer Star Neymar to Make Comeback with Help from Physio
Another thing we generally feature in our monthly physiotherapy news report, is something that relates to popular athletes and other celebrities in the periphery of pop-culture. Those who follow international soccer (aka fútbol) are well aware of superstar Neymar (Brazilian forward for Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal and the Brazil national team) who suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury during a World Cup qualifying match against Uruguay last month. Fans of the footballer needn’t fret, as at the beginning of this month Neymar has had a successful surgery. Reports indicate that his doctor’s are pleased with the procedure’s outcome and have initiated a physiotherapy-based rehabilitation plan to get him back on the pitch as soon as possible.
Stay tuned each month as we monitor physiotherapy news from around the world that may apply to your own health and wellness program.
